Virginia,

I think what you are looking to do is set yourself up
as Doing Business As under a fictitious name.

Your Social Security number will suffice as a tax ID
unless you are selling a physical product.

Visit your local small business association website
for details on the paperwork that you need to file
with the county you live in.

(I'm sure there are more knowledgeable people here
who could add to this...)
