That would be the "Quick Launch" section, and is managed by storing file
shortcuts in the following directory:
c:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Quick Launch

Thanks, I did find it but I still wonder what that area in the lower left of
the desktop is called and how it's handled.
