I had an issue with an SMC card that sounds like your issue. This was however with my PDA an not my notebook. Apparantly the SMC card was 8-bit bus and 8 bit is no longer supported in my new PDA. I searched several days for this because all drivers installed properly it recognised the card everything seemed to work, but I could not get any connection. I too a long search and my new PDA now only suppors 16-bit PC cards.... Maybe you should check on that...
