If you have the chance to apply Named Ranges, by all means do that.
It's one of my favourite tips.

And the comments on leading zeroes and the troubles they may cause, I can sadly confirm.

I think you just hit the problem with this method.  I'm going to have to use
specific ranges within the spreadsheet due to the layout.  The spreadsheets
we will be dealing with are not just data stores/calculators - they are used
as informative/formatted forms.
