Jim,
I have found the best policy:  be suspicious if they ask for any personal information.  There are many scams going on that look perfectly legitimate, so I would check it out before furnishing anything.  Did you check the source header of the e-mail.  I get tons of e-mails that show "misconfigured sender".  And they aren't even addressed to me, but they get in my box anyway.  Looks like the Spammers (Scammers) in Nigeria are smarter that the ISPs and have found ways around alleged security.
