It narrows down to a few factors: Backend Design (well indexed and normalized) Front End Design (Hit and run designs, don't stay connected to the backend unless you have too) Network Speed (far more important then hardware speed/memory. Sure, the more your interface leans on the processor/ram, the more you need CPU speed and ram, but for actual database work, the network speed and server hard drive access time are far more criticl) Did I mention 'unbound'.
