The exceptions will eat you alive, I am well aware.  Why do you think I am asking?  I hope someone will graciously donate their experience with that last 10 percent so I am spared the task. ;-)

LOL, it is not easy.  Simple algorithms that handle 90% of the cases are 
easy.  That last 10% will take an order of magnitude longer to solve.
