Disemvowelling?   It has been around for longer than that.   Not necessariy with an asterisk, 
but obfuscating key words by replacing letters with symbols in texts has been used to by 
groups such as the masons for a long time.

Then there are grawlixs which have been around since the first half of the 20th Cetury 

#@$%*!
