Have you tried to install just the client tools on a second machine and have 
it connect to the SQL Server database?  Is SQL Server databse installed on 
the same machine as EM?  do you have the same problems with QA?  Do you have 
auditing turned on?  run profiler on the SQL Server database to see if there 
is anything else happening in the background.
