[dba-SQLServer] Can't Register Server - FINALLY

It's on my laptop, which is running Win2k Pro. I haven't even looked
for a HOSTS file.

This is what worked for me whenever I could not get SQL server to
register a server...

In your HOSTS file add an entry for the SQL server with its IP address
like so...

192.168.1.254	mySQLServer

Of course if the IP address of the sql server changes you will have to
make manual adjustments. In my experience SQL server boxes rarely have
their IP addresses changed. This approach also assumes that the SQL
server has a static IP address.

Well, after 3 uninstalls and reinstalls, SQL Server finally allowed me
to register a server! That pounding you heard last night was my head
beating on the wall. :-{ I could get EM up and I could even get QA up,
although of course neither of them really worked since they couldn't
connect to an active server, but I couldn't register a server until that
last install. Nothing changed in between except my frustration level
and the name of the server, but suddenly there it was.

MDAC is 2.7 and has been since 2.7 came out. I've kept it upgraded
until 2.7. I won't put 2.8 on until I install the VB.Net stuff. It
comes up as NEWBOOK.

Charlotte,
Please humor me for a bit, what MDAC is currently isntalled on your
system? you can download the component checker from MS, then just run it

and it'll tell you you're running either 2.5 - 2.8

I have found that MDAC 2.6 SP1 is generally the best combo of all,
although 2.7 is good too.
also you probably have a server icon in your system tray, what name does

it say for your local server?
