Gary, The weirdness in thumbnails view is probably the clue - that those image files show only as icons rather than thumbnails - and you mentioned that in the details view, the ordinary properties and attributes did not display for the strange files the way they do for the regular files. Clearly, either something is still going on with those files, some process is still holding onto them - or maybe the thumbnail database file is, indeed, corrupted. When my camera determines that the photo I am snapping horizontally needs to be snapped vertically (not when I decide to take a vertical shot), certainly, it does something different to the picture. Probably, your Canon does, too. Whatever that process is may alter the format in mystical ways that could be overcome by doing an individual export or save of such a photo at the time you bring it into the computer.
