[dba-Tech] Weird PC logon problem

XP Pro SP2 - yes there is a local administrator account, but (yes you've
guessed it) I don't know the password... I tried all the usual work ones,
and the obvious ones, but no avail. My boss wants me to reinstall Windows,
but I think it's overkill.

What OS? You need to log in to a local user account rather than a domain
account. There should be at least a local "administrator" account.
