Jon:

This is excellent news... Though it should not be difficult to find this
setting any tips would be greatly appreciated.

You are brilliant.

I spent a day playing with Group Policies in Active Directory, and there
are all sorts of options for Windows Update via WSUS... You can tell it
to install everything that doesn't require a reboot without asking the
users, or to install the recommended updates as well as the security
updates. All great for me, as it means I don't have to go around 175
computers and run windows update any more :-)

I stopped doing it automatically (the install part) because it would
cause my SQL Server to reboot right in the middle of trying to get work
done.

This morning all the computers and router was off-line. I initially
assumed there had been a power outage but then became aware that none of
the clocks had suffered the same fate.

It took a while to figure out what had happen but after checking the
event log it was noted that a MS auto update had gone through on the
server.... Yes, I know what you are going to say; "Never auto update on;
and especially not server."

There had been an auto update and the update affected the active
directory and these effects rippled through to each station and each
station was auto-rebooted.

So never have MS auto-update on...
