[dba-Tech] Facebook releases its engine core

Hi Gustav:

Ha ha ha...not at all but I worked with MySQL for a while before before I became aware of any sort of GUI.

If someone was a little industrious and had some time between contracts, I am sure some rudimentary web FE could be assembled and posted. It was not until somewhere around Oracle 8 or 9, that a nice third-party GUI came out called Toad...it was not until Oracle 11.x when the company made their own web based GUI.

There are still people out there that believe realmen don't use GUIs. We have become a little lazy now a days.

The potential for this new system is really impressive, in that it is a fully distributive SQL DB and the price is such that young tech or teacher, can afford to get up to speed considering that the demands for skilled people in this area of technology is massive.

Hi Jim

Then, I guess, Facebook has developed a custom interface - can't imagine they have a 1000 users sitting typing commands ...

Hi Gustav:

Good questions.

On the Presto site I saw a link to documents on the engine: http://prestodb.io/docs/current/

The whole thing appears pretty rudimentary right now, Alpha I understand but just like the Hyper-V server I would suspect a GUI will be built shortly. The good thing is that this is not a Map Reduce engine but a SQL engine. It seems for now we are stuck with a CLI but once installed it will run from any browser so someone will probably assemble a FE similar PHPadmin for MySQL.

I can still remember when MYSQL only had a CLI... ;-)

Hi Jim

But how do you "talk" to this engine? I see only a command line interface.
The sparse doc mentions that "Presto uses HTTP for all communication, internal and external" but how? Via JSON?

Where can some serious documentation or guide be found? The user group looks like a mess with all sorts of nerd questions.

I have an idea for a project which mostly would read data, not in the PB range, just "without limits".

Hi All:

Facebook open sources its SQL-on-Hadoop engine! Cool.

http://gigaom.com/2013/11/06/facebook-open-sources-its-sql-on-hadoop-engine-
and-the-web-rejoices/#!

So the next time you are designing for a client who has a million or more customers and many billions of pieces of data, you have a solution at your figure tips. ;-)
