Unfortunately, the only platform that it does not run on easily is Windows. (A windows client can be created but a real Linux server has to be at the backend.): Here is just one example of features. (There are so many more but this is a good start): http://www.tecmint.com/rsync-local-remote-file-synchronization-commands/ RSYNC can copy files, backup files (full/incremental)/synchronize/full-image), on a single computer, network, across the web, can fully encrypt data, within any VPN and is designed to run in unstable environments as it can recover when a communication signal is dropped. Below is a simple example of what it can do. (I take no credit for figuring out all the parameters as a far smart developer than I assembled the code.) Given that you have SSH installed on all your computers...I believe it is by default on Windows10 and definitely on Apple and Linux boxes by default...and if it isn't it is very easy to do so. Assuming the the following code works: ssh username at mydomainname -p 3333 or ssh username at 192.167.111.200 -p 3333 ### 3333 is just the port through your router/firewall/ssh listening port. It ca n be accessed from anywhere. This is how to transfer a file from a server/network to a remote station/server via a secure SSH tunnel. rsync -avz --progress ~/music/thechoir.mp3 -e "ssh -p 3333" username at mydomain:~/desktop/ Where: "~" just says start at the home directory...i.e. ~/music/thechoir.mp3 (get the following file from the following location.)...use a SSH tunnel: "ssh -p 3333" using credentials and data directed towards specific remote computer location: username at mydomain:~/desktop/ Hope this helps someone. This of course is just a small sample of what can be done. Under Windows, it only runs in a Cygwin environment. We did some serious testing years ago, and it failed. The simple reason is, that it gets confused by the naming conventions of Windows files and folders which are case insentitive also for "foreign" characters. It may work in an ascii-only world, but outside, no. I mentioned before, that if you need syncing of files between locations in a Windows environment, go for the native DFS replication between servers of version 2003 R2+. It is rock stable as is communicates at the OS level, not the file level. This means that, say, renaming a file or moving a complete folder is just that - at all nodes - and within a second or so. /gustav -----Oprindelig meddelelse----- Fra: dba-Tech [mailto:dba-tech-bounces at databaseadvisors.com] P? vegne af Jim Lawrence Sendt: 15. december 2015 21:39 Til: Discussion of Hardware and Software issues Emne: [dba-Tech] The Swiss army knife of backup systems In the computer world, it seems one old command line program has been the ultimate data transfer application...that is "rsync". It can of course be just run off a virtual drive. The only other items that must be setup is that it is running on a 64bit motherboard, appropriate address setup on the router (default port 22 but you can assign any port you want) and having SSH installed. Note: X2Go will only run on a 2D distro GUI...the excellent distro is MATE (http://mate-desktop.com/), which uses very little memory, can be installed on the server and X2Go can be set to call the appropriate desktop session. (Wouldn't it be cool if, at the login prompt, you could pick which FE you would like, at any time, Windows7, 8 or 10 and then login.) There is three lines of code at the command prompt to setup a SSH server: sudo apt-get install openssh-server # install the server version of the SSH software sudo gedit /etc/ssh/sshd_config # if needed, change the default port number sudo service ssh restart # Restart of the SSH service You don't have go in and setup SSH security as it defaults to an auto-generates 1024 bit RSA encryption. Once you have everything installed you can test it from another computer using the program PuTTY (http://bit.ly/1YlLNhx). For me the X2Go is working flawlessly. I have not tested the server with more than three consecutive sessions so I am not sure of any issues but my server has 16GB RAM. ;-) Jim ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Colby" To: "Discussion of Hardware and Software issues" Sent: Tuesday, December 15, 2015 5:21:00 PM Subject: Re: [dba-Tech] Remote take over programs It's odd that this should come in today. It first appeared after upgrading to Windows 10 from 8.1. It's annoying to say the least, especially since there seems no consensus on what's causing this or how to get rid of it. Anyone have any experience with this and able to offer some help? Thanks! The following add-ins are the defaults - I haven't installed any of them and I don't think I really need those listed below. Thought I'd ask for possible repercussions down the road if I uninstall them. I'm not on Exchange or SharePoint and can't imagine either being necessary - ever. I have no intentions of supporting either. I don't use OneNote and I never write about it. Also, I have no intentions of using Outlook with any social media, but I might want to write about it. I'm wondering if I uninstall it but then need it, will Outlook warn me or will I spend hours researching because I don't remember that I uninstalled this add-in? Things used to be much simpler and now, you can do something and end up with a lot of trouble and lacking the knowledge to fix things. :) I just spent 30 minutes in Airplane mode and couldn't reset it. Finally found the fix on a Dell site -- I had accidentally used a function key combo that disables Wi-Fi and you can't reset it using interface options -- you have to use the toggle key combo to set things to right. Amazing that Windows couldn't point me in the right direction. I was jumping through option hoops and getting nowhere fast with Windows help. :( It's like sewing -- measure twice, cut once -- I've learned to ask first before committing because no telling what limbo I'll find myself in because of some little feature or nuance I didn't know a thing about. If you connect to Hotmail/MSN/Live/Outlook mail then it comes into a separate mail folder/pst just like imap accounts do. But yea, you can disable all add-ins and wait for them to be needed before you have them turn on automatically each time. -----Original Message----- From: dba-Tech [mailto:dba-tech-bounces at databaseadvisors.com] On Behalf Of Jon Tydda Sent: Sunday, December 27, 2015 1:43 PM To: Discussion of Hardware and Software issues Subject: Re: [dba-Tech] speeding up Outlook Hi Susan As far as I'm aware, the Social Connector is used when you want to have Outlook open mail from a Hotmail/Outlook.com account.
