Below is a link to a complete product, OS and application included. It is designed to run on a standalone server and sit on the edge of the network. All data from the network can then pass from the internet, in and out again.

It is designed to monitor all ports, addresses, protocols and activity going on within the LAN. It can either be run on the station with a full GUI and/or run in headless state via a secure web interface, from anywhere on the LAN or through the internet.

The system can automatically detect and block many activities that are not standard on the network or are directed to and from the internet. According to the developers, it capabilities match and many (most, according to the developers) cases surpassed high end and high priced security solutions used on many of the major companies. Now, every company, regardless of their financial depth can have a super secure network. You can download the full package, install the OS on a computer or/and download the source file and recompile it specifically for the computer on which the OS/application will be hosted:

It uses a Debian core unlike most security packages that all seem to use CentOS.

I wish this package was available when I was in the business, but then security issues and threats that are standard fare today, didn't exist then.
