Sugar alcohol, which is neither a sugar nor an alcohol, was originally
developed as a laxative. They discovered it was sweet and safe to consume
and now our candy market is full of sugar-free stuff that actually tastes
good. It's low carb and low in calories.

Pick up almost any bag of sugar-free candy and look for the *tol ingredient
-- that's the sugar alcohol.

The downside is... it was originally developed as a laxative. You can't eat
much of it.
