[dba-Tech] Cable modem speed reduction by router

Hi John

We mostly use DrayTek and Zyxel - also because of excellent local support. I prefer DrayTek because they have never (really) failed for us and a faster admin interface.

It is hard to find specifications for the WAN bandwidth for cheap routers as they are not expected to connect to fast WAN lines.

However, medium-level routers often have a specification for a maximum of concurrent VPN channels at a given bandwidth which, of course, only is possible if the total bandwidth can be let through. Also, such routers are expected to connect to 100+ Mbit/s fiber connections, while small routers often face an xDSL connection of some kind.

Hi Gustav,
That was a thought in the back of my mind, although I find it rather
ridiculous that new routers, no matter the cost, don't support 100Mbps pass
through.

Any suggestions on a router?
John

Hi John

I don't have the detailed specifications for those routers, but it appears
that you hit the maximum bandwidth on the WAN side of these cheap routers.

You may need a more expensive router with a confirmed WAN bandwidth
specification.

Hi All,
A cable modem, dynamic IP, with a speed of 60Mbps.
Check the speed with PC direct connect to modem 60+Mbps.
Check the speed with modem > router > PC 60+Mbps.

Change to a cable modem, static IP, with a speed of 100 Mbps.
Check the speed with PC direct connect to modem 100+Mbps.

When connected to the TP-Link TL-WR842ND router can only got 90Mbps tops
(only one device connected to router).
Try a NETGEAR RangeMax WNDR3300 router I can only get 90Mbps tops.
I check and all firmware is up to date.
Settings in order. But I could be missing something. Any suggestions?

TIA
John B
