Jim,

Just one correction: Sun didn't create MySQL, it bought it. And then Oracle
bought Sun. Monty lasted about a month in the Oracle business
sphere/ecology before quitting to start MariaDB. Although the Oracle/MySQL
team does put out enhancements, the MariaDB team is way ahead in terms of
new features, and the MySQL team is basically playing catch-up. Since
MariaDB is a drop-in replacement for MySQL, a significant number of MySQL
users have moved on to MariaDB.

Finally, a note of trivia. Monty names his databases after his daughters.
