BTW what prompted me to ask is that I ran Mint 18.2 on an old Vista laptop from a dvd and it ran. But it won't install.

In a nutshell, just boot to a LIveCD/USB version of Linux. If it works, then your hardware is compatible. If it doesn't then it may not be.
