Subject: [dba-Tech] Get Windows Phone ringtones on your iPhone

Hi all

We (me and wife) had to abandon our beloved Lumia Windows Phones, as availability of functional apps has diminished below a critical level. Not wishing to be tracked from end to end by evil Google nor messing around with numerous Android versions not being updated by manufacturers, we decided for iPhone 8.

That's a neat piece of hardware, though the interface - compared to Windows Phone - needs a major brushup. Given, that Apple is preferred by many, if not most, creative people, I was surprised and disappointed to find only a dull selection of ringtones installed. iTunes is not an option for me - Spotify is much better and cheaper too - thus, no ringtones from that source. 

By searching here and there, I managed to get some collections of the ringtones from the various editions of Windows Phone and a tool to bring them to the iPhones, and collected the bits and pieces in an article:

You can make any audio file a ringtone using iTunes, it?s how I do all of mine:

Thanks, I know (or rather: had heard so), but I'm not on iTunes. 
And the task was not to create some ringtones, but to find, select, and export those of Windows Phone to the iPhone.

Did the same fir same reasons. Changed from Windows phone to Android. Don't like it. Auto correct drives me nuts. I created a fake google account just for the phone and turn of any tracking i can find. I don't like it.

My Daughter has been updating her iPhone ringtones for a long time. I have no idea how she does it. She has even created some of her own.

I'm behind you both a bit. Well, I was ahead because my Lumia 928 was broken beyond functioning. But after trying 4 different Android phones this past year I just couldn't stand it anymore so I bought a used Lumia 928 for about $80. So that?s my phone and it's such a relief. 

I carry a cheap tiny android around for work related apps I need. I don't care about any of the other apps. 

Eventually they'll force me out of my Windows Phone but maybe by then someone will come out with a "new" UI - that just happens to be like Windows phone ?

I have rarely been involved with Github/GetLab. I was at the tail end of my career when these sites became the de facto online app source but I have pulled numerous chunks of code from the GitHub public repositories over the years. Mostly for enjoyment but occasionally working out a solution.

Aside: I just hope Microsoft doesn't bork it; "kill the golden goose" while trying to make more profit.

GitHub works extremely well. All my recent public VBA projects are stored on GitHub:

Also, it integrates nicely with Visual Studio, but I mostly use VS for work that can't be public, thus it has been of little use to me in that context. Until now, I have used TFS online for those repositories, but I find it somewhat tricky to work with. That will change now.

My goodness, you have an impressive list of code routines. 

Its good to hear that you can now work collaboratively with multiple contributors so your GitHub account can be more like a work site than just an off-line repository. 

I have never used TFS before, too big and too expensive. (...and there are a number of low cost alternatives but maybe not applications that can incorporate into the Microsoft code-sphere.)

I believe that VS can work with most repositories, but at least TFS and GitHub are tightly integrated (= easy to setup and connect). But, as VS is a tool for large enterprises, it will have to work with the (expensive) systems these use.

TFS Online has a neat free tier. I think it has been renamed a couple of times - the current seems to be:

This is nice if you are a team and wish to control the full process. As it will match even very large projects, I find it an overkill and too heavy (loaded with features I would never use) for my single-developer projects.

Frankly, i would love to have a discussion with the designers of Outlook
365 to learn what they were thinking when they omitted obvious and
essential commands -- or worse, maybe they exist but are so well-hidden
that a OneNote expert cannot find them. Short of re-installing an old
version of Office, I haven't thought my way out of this dilemma. If you
have any suggestions I would be grateful.

Hmm... it never occurred to me that office wouldn't be able to see an
external drive. I will try copying the files from the external to the SSD

We (me and wife) had to abandon our beloved Lumia Windows Phones, as availability of functional apps has diminished below a critical level. Not wishing to be tracked from end to end by evil Google nor messing around with numerous Android versions not being updated by manufacturers, we decided for iPhone 8.

That's a neat piece of hardware, though the interface - compared to Windows Phone - needs a major brushup. Given, that Apple is preferred by many, if not most, creative people, I was surprised and disappointed to find only a dull selection of ringtones installed. iTunes is not an option for me - Spotify is much better and cheaper too - thus, no ringtones from that source. 

By searching here and there, I managed to get some collections of the ringtones from the various editions of Windows Phone and a tool to bring them to the iPhones, and collected the bits and pieces in an article:

I think the only reason to change your Office application is if you are doing cooperative multi-user online type work then... Word processing is just word processing. If you really want to create visually awesome documents then I would suggest Adobe InDesign (https://www.adobe.com/ca/products/indesign.html)...an excellent application but then you have to need that functionality. It allows you to create a full publication and then send it for printing or for building a fully inter-active website. Dreamweaver of steroids.

Hi Arthur:

You have to go to BIOS setup when booting <press> f2 or f10, depending on your machine. Then go into the boot section. (You may have to have the boot USB stick connected before before re-booting the computer, so it will put that option in the boot order list. Move the USB boot option to the top of the boot list and save and exit. It will attempt boot up off the USB device first.

I run Unraid on an AMD Ryzen 2600 with 32 gigs ram.? In a few months I 
fully expect to buy a 16 core 32 thread Ryzen 3700 to replace the 2600.? 
Unraid currently has about 6 tb, with about 4 tb of that used by my 
video and music collection.? I have a 1tb NVME SSD unassigned, which I 
use to host my VMs and docker containers, and a 240gb SSD unassigned for 
use with my Windows VM.

I have a Windows 10 pro VM which currently sports 3 cores / 6 threads 
and 8 gb RAM.? I have passed through my AMD RX580 GPU as well as a 240gb 
SSD, keyboard and mouse.? I use this as a Python development machine, 
with TeamViewer running so that I can remote in from my laptop when I am 
away from my house.? Eventually I will be doing machine learning / AI on 
this machine using the passed through graphics card (maybe?) and python.

I have a Linux Mint VM sporting 2 cores / 4 threads and 8 gb ram.? It 
also runs TeamViewer.? I just use this machine to learn about Linux / Mint.

The remaining core and memory is left to Unraid.

I have a Plex Media Server DOCKER serving up my extensive video and 
music collection.

I have a MySQL Docker for learning MySQL.? I use SQLite on the Windows 
VM with Python for most quick and dirty database things as I learn 
Python.? BTW Python really rocks!? The more I use it, the more I learn 
about it, the better I like it.

Unraid is a bit of a stretch particularly for a non-Linux guy like 
myself.? However it has a good active community and some really good 
youtube videos for getting some things set up.? It provides quite a 
powerful and relatively easy to set up system for doing the VM / Docker 
thing.

As I recall, the personal macro workbook opens with Excel, but doesn?t fire off open events. That code would need to be tied to the workbook you need to run the macro on
