I am one of the apparently few in the world who prefers PowerDesigner to
Erwin, but whichever one uses (a much cheaper one with almost all the same
abilities is DeZign), IMO such a tool is essential.
As for functional specifications and use cases, well, long-time listers will
know that I consider these essential to successful projects as well.
Fuller's Fifth Law: all contract ambiguities are interpreted in the
stakeholder's favour.
A collection of use cases comprises a complete description of what both
client and contractor expect from an application. Anything less and you lay
yourself open to Fuller's Fifth Law.
In complex situations (i.e. where NT services are being developed that must
work together and also with various applications), UML diagrams are also
essential. For typical Access apps, they aren't, IMO, but I often create
them anyway. Once you know how to read them, they really are worth 1000
words.
And finally, a pen and a pad of paper are also essential.

thanks, I will download an evaluation copy tonight. What tool do you use if
any?
For datamodeling I use ERWIN, for about 2 years now, to maintain and
develop my datamodels. From that I can generate scripts to
- create a database in Access, Orcale, SQL, DB2, Ingres,etc
- update the structure of a database according to version numbering
- generate documantation of the database
and not the least important I can create an overview in Excel. This I use
to convience, update, show the person who pays my bill :-) of the model and
choices which are made. For some reason everybody likes Excel and know how
to operate the software.

Personally, I do not think this is OT. Any question that assists Access
developers is valuable.
This particular question references the hardest part of development -
conception of the project.
Whether we use CASE tools, modeling, or pencil and paper; design concept is
hard.
I appreciate the question and Shamil's answer will help me.

Group,
There are a lot of programmers, experienced less experienced, everybody has
it own way of working. Programming skills en techniques are mostly not the
issue. You can get a book and learn-study some. What I am curious about is
if there is anyone who use softwaretools (could be a complete app or just
an excel sheet or just by head) to help him-her with the development
proces.
At the moment I am working freelance at a large insurance companie in
Holland. The discussion is starting if the use of a CASETOOL could
structure, improve, speed up the development proces. Now each
WISH/Functionality is being described in a Functional Design then that
design is being translated to a technical design. All stored in a word
document with several chapters. It costs very lot of time to read
everything and take that part of the design which you need.
For myself I have started to work on a database in which I split up
business functions and group all technical functions used in that
businessfunction. Now this tool is to be used by more programmers and added
functionality with it. This keeps work for me as freelancer :-).
I am looking for other tools, Suggestions, remarkts, stories, experiences
which I and offcourse the readers of this list can use to improve their own
development proces.
