Mark When we were writing the BEU we found that this was a limitation of code - couldn't do it. As Charles suggest you can certainly create a new field, query the data across and delete the old, all in code, but take care of indexes and relationships. IIRC though the SQL ALTER TABLE command gained an ALTER COLUMN bit in Access XP which hadn't been there in A97.
