At the product I attended they were launching both together (VS.Net and Windows 2003). I've received heaps of advertising in both areas.. It depends on what you subscribe to. They are pushing them in different areas too. They're targetting windows 2003 more at existing NT4 networks as the reasons to upgrade from 2000 are relatively minimal. .Net is being targetted at existing ASP, VB developers as well as trying to grab a small share of the Java community with C#. Its a well known fact that there are more VB developers in the world than any other, and with the porting of stand-alone apps to a web interface becoming ever more predominant, it offers an extra piece of the pie that .NET is hoping to get. I disagree with the 'Too Late into the market' statement - if it were a static or shrinking market then yes - perhaps, however the number of required web sites is obviously still growing at a reasonable rate, and will more than likely continue long into the future. Long enough for it to establish itself which it has done reasonably well IMO, in the short time it has been out. You can go to different web sites, read different articles, etc and get different views on how popular it is - most of the time it depends on the personal preferences of the author. .NET won't and doesn't need to, completely wipe out any other opposition. Other languages will retain their place as there will always be percentages of coders who wish to stick to their preferred language, as long as it can do what the others can in a similar time frame. The push that VS.Net is giving (and one that I agree with) is that once you become competent with the tools, you are able to develop the same application in less time. The Java community are still lacking and genuine IDE that can do this. I don't see myself as biassed in any particular direction, even though we are predominantly a MS dominated corporation. I've dabbled with numerous languages such as Cold Fusion, ASP, C, Java, Perl, PHP - but can still see the advantages that .Net offers. I really do believe they are more focussing on Server 2003. They have a serious problem with that. 60% of all (Windows) servers in the world are still running NT4. There is a huge market for them. If those servers are not upgraded no .Net will ever run... Apparently the invested a lot of effort in the upgrade wizard from NT4 to 2003. Upgrading from NT4 to W2K is a real pain in the a*s Erwin -----Oorspronkelijk bericht----- Van: Marcus, Scott (GEAE, Contractor) [mailto:scott.marcus at ae.ge.com] Verzonden: dinsdag 29 juli 2003 21:07 Aan: 'Access Developers discussion and problem solving' Onderwerp: RE: [AccessD]OT: C# was no-ip.com Erwin, Weird since my situation was completely the reverse of yours. And I got lots of mails for Server 2003. I'm sure they are puttig much more effort in launching Server 2003 than launching VS 2003. _______________________________________________ AccessD mailing list AccessD at databaseadvisors.com http://databaseadvisors.com/mailman/listinfo/accessd Website: http://www.databaseadvisors.com _______________________________________________ AccessD mailing list AccessD at databaseadvisors.com http://databaseadvisors.com/mailman/listinfo/accessd Website: http://www.databaseadvisors.com IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ ******************** This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and may contain information protected by law from disclosure.
