I just discovered that the slowdown was the result of downloading from my dev machine, but putting the file in a dir on the server. By simply downloading the file to my dev machine "my received files", the download speed jumped to a 406 kbytes / sec. Only 25 minutes / image instead of 1.5 hours. We're happy. John W.
