[AccessD] Mail Merge Fails

If a mail merge fails, it can leave an instance of word open and the doc
that word instance was using locked, i,e, it can't be deleted because the
doc is in use.  Obviously I can go in to the task manager, select the word
process (image name?) and "End Process".  Is there any way to do that
programatically?  Is there any way to "name" the word instance that my
program is opening so that I can go check to see if that instance is open?

Am I making this too complicated?  I'm not by any stretch a word mail merge
guru and this seems very unwieldy.
