[AccessD] Autonumber in SQL-Server

Hi,

let's say I need an autonumber field in a table located on a SQL Sever 2000
but can't make it an ID-field.
Using a trigger to fill in the value is no option either.

Could I use a user defined function? Are there any know problem/limitations
with that?
