Corruption of the main doc is not more rare. I have had more Word doc
go south on me than any type locking file or mdb or any other file. I
have never heard of a locking file getting corrupt.

I have never had an Excel doc go south, so I can't speak about which is
more common in Excel.

Something will goof in them, and then that file is locked out.  Since
Word/Excel is saving changes in those temp files, actual corruption in
the
original document is more rare (but not unheard of...excel and word
have to
update the original document when you save it, so that is when
corruption
can occur there).
