I haven't read through all the replies, however the first half-dozen or so didn't mention it... Anwyay, rather than using append queried etc, you can simply set the seed through code, just as you would with SQL Server. I think the keyword is AUTOINCREMENT or COUNTER or something. A quick google search should find the answer.
