[AccessD] Date Range Query

I am trying to make a very simple query, but I am having an odd problem.

I want to make a date range selectable so I have "between [Start Date] and
[End Date]" as the criteria under a date.  Strangely this always returns
November and December of last year, regardless of the date entered.  If I
hard code the date, I get the correct records.

Background info that may be pertinent:
I am using Access XP with SQL 2000 backend just using linked tables.  The
date is coming through as text, but I have used Cdate([StartDate]) to help
make the query work.
