Pedro, Oh, I think I understand well enough. Say the two data points are 7 and 10. The average is 8.5. The population standard deviation is calculated by hand like this: (10 - 8.5)^2 = 2.25 (7 - 8.5)^2 = 2.25 2.25 + 2.25 = 4.5 4.5/2 = 2.25 2.25^0.5 = 1.5 My formula is: (10 - 7)/2 = 1.5 So rather than go through the rigamarole of calculating a standard deviation I just took the short cut.
