If you have X parent records and each parent has one child
record, you have
X parent records and X child records.  If you add a parent
to this set
without a child you have X+1 parent records and X child
records.  The two
sets of records must be counted separately since the numbers
of records can
vary drastically in most databases.  Does this answer the
question?
