You can setup Thunderbird to auto-delete old emails from a folder. Right-click on a folder, and select Properties. In the Folder Properties dialog, select the Retention Policy tab. From there you can set the maximum number or age of emails to keep. 

I set a limit of 30 days on most of my email digest subscriptions. Anything older and I rely on DatabaseAdvisors search.
