In my opinion, Access 2 - 97 were mdb-functionality-centric.

I have databases that are installed for over 5 years that use DAO and SQL.
The introduction of .Net FW to the database doesn't speed it up, neither
does fancy buttons/ribbons using GDIPlus (graphics).
