My main machine at work (I have three systems) is a laptop so I may take it with me when traveling. I use a docking station with two 22" flat screens connected. The main issue is that docking station can only take one DVI and one VGA monitor. So the monitors are on two different connectors. This works well for me. I can use the left monitor to open Access and work on the forms, reports etc. I keep the Right monitor for coding and debugging; and I usually have Outlook open on the right. I do not need any key strokes to switch between single or dual monitors. When I plug my laptop on the docking station it will automatically split the screen. When traveling, my "left" monitor is what shows and everything that is supposed to show on the "right" shows properly. However, it actually causes the 2nd unit to replicate the first rather than be an extension of it. I have to go into the display settings to do mine.
