Using fonts on the written page is quite different from using them on line. The font face for the body text is really a font family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif. The font family for the headers is: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif. These are all standard font faces understood by practically all computer operating systems. Using font families means that a user's computer will check to see if it has Verdana. If not, it moves on to see if it has Arial, and so forth. Because of using font families, a web designer can assume that the user will see more or less what the designer intended, but there's no way of guaranteeing that exactly, only relatively. The only way around this issue is to make the headers all graphics. That way a designer can use any kind of fancy font desired, but all the graphics add to the "weight" of the page in loading. A serif font face (Times Roman) isn't that good for the body text. It is more common to use a sans serif font for the body text, because it's easier to read, and a serif font for the headers. Besides, Times Roman is really boring. I can of course change the leading (line spacing) and kerning (letter spacing). It is the white space that makes the words easier to read. Especially for us old farts ;-) Regards, Karen Rosenstiel Seattle WA USA -----Original Message----- From: accessd-bounces at databaseadvisors.com [mailto:accessd-bounces at databaseadvisors.com] On Behalf Of Susan Harkins Sent: Friday, June 27, 2008 6:27 AM To: Access Developers discussion and problem solving Subject: Re: [AccessD] Feedback Needed Round 4 > > JK. I think you've got a good point about the white space. I'm still using 800 x 600 (shut up, I'm really old). Seems to me that there's probably a "standard" font face, isn't there? I know that every manuscript I submit is in Times Roman 12 -- it's the standard. I'm not suggesting that you use that on your web site, but is there a standard font face now? Karen probably knows everything on the following page, but thought I'd recommend it just in case: <http://www.efuse.com/Design/web_fonts_basics.html#TypeMatters> <http://www.w3.org/Fonts/> Susan H. -- AccessD mailing list AccessD at databaseadvisors.com http://databaseadvisors.com/mailman/listinfo/accessd Website: http://www.databaseadvisors.com No virus found in this incoming message.
