For home users this probably isn't something you do very often. In a business environment, however, when you are logging into your machine, 'locking' your desktop put's up a locked screen, and to unlock it, it's just like you were logging in (Ctrl-Alt-Del, followed by your password). If you are on a network with other people, you should be locking your desktop when you are not at your computer, to prevent people from using your credentials to do what they want.
