That path sounds very similar... just substitute IBM for
PDP/VAX and it all sounds very familiar.

IBM 1401 (can't remember the language)
IBM 360 - COBOL
IBM System 36 - RPG
  gap of approx 10 years
IBM System 3 - RPG
Commodore 64!
Tandy 1000 PC compatible!!
DBase ll
DBase lll
DBase lV ugh
Borland Paradox
Access version 1.1
etc.
