Right click on desktop - choose personalize - add the icons you wish.

For startup programs use either ccleaner or to be completely thorough (and
possibly overwhelmed) use MS's Autoruns.

Or use one of the programs that makes it look and work like Windows 7.

I have it on my Win 8 desktop, but I'll be dipped if I can figure out how I
did it.  Now I'm trying to figure out how to handle startup programs!
