Well how red-faced do I feel? You're spot-on Susan. This happens if you reduce the width of the index window. Widen it and voila, there are the settings. Doh! Still don't think it's very clever of MS for this to happen, but it's certainly not clever of me not to have realised. Thanks Susan.
