Since Windows 2000, people have used the condition:

    if(os.version.startswith("Windows 9") || os.version.startswith("Windows
ME"))

or some such equivalent to identify Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows ME.

It's in thousands of lines of code, all over the place. Calling it "Windows
9" would break too many applications for Microsoft to bother.
