I've used VBMapi from Everything Access with great luck.  It does have a one-time charge but if you're working for customers they do not get charged.  https://www.everythingaccess.com/vbmapi.asp

I try to programmatically send email through Outlook.  Outlook pops up a
message requiring a button click.

MS sucks sometimes.

What is the alternative?
