Back in the day (2010 ish) I was designing a custom C# build to automate
SQL Server. I ended up buying licenses for the Windows media version which
was being dropped by MS. I got legal licenses for $25 or so each. I then
built VMs which i installed these licenses on. Six VMs total though I
usually ran 5 VMs. I ran the VMs on a home built server running Windows
2008 with 32gb of ram. Each VM got 4 gb ram. The VMs were dedicated to
running Accuzip so weren't particularly stressed.

Basically the C# program pulled name / address data out of SQL Server into
csv text files (2 million addresses in a file), and pushed the files into
these VMs. The Accuzip software processed the files for address
validation, then shipped the files over the internet to california (from
Connecticut) for change of address processing, then only the changed
addresses were pushed back over the internet to the VMs and my C# program
would pull the changed data back into SQL Server. I processed about 440
MILLION addresses every month using this system, keeping the addresses
clean and up to date. It turns out that C# can actually watch changes in a
remote directory on a server which is how I knew when to push new files to
the VMs.

I used a raid 6 array of about 10 tbytes to host backups of the VMs as well
as about 8 name / address tables. Raid 6 is very robust.
