Custom PC -
I am still looking for a win-11 system to last at least 5 years of MS updates.
Considering the way 10 went -
2GB @ start, now needing more than 8B RAM,
and 32GB storage OK for apps too, to wanting over 64, OK, nearly 100GB for Windows(to do a major version update)
32 OS,
16GB Hiber,
16GB Pagefile ( visual Studio Office, Email & EDGE)
32GB for new version creation, and backout from the update files (now windows will "reserve" that space )
6GB for new version update files ISO.
Options
Large case, spread out modules, plug-in's lots of fans and extra slots -
Small "compact" device @ half the price limited upgrade space - probably needing extra external cooling fan -
Assume the savings will allow replacement (OK an additional system, with old one being a Backup device) ) in a couple of years
Maybe a raid pair "OK" SSD's for your Apps and data
Separating OS from the Apps, and from your data can allow backups to be split to be @ different intervals & smaller image sets so faster to take and upload
And a pair of very good SSD's for the OS, and other files.
Remember pagefile use will hammer the cells and vastly reduce their life.
Maybe get enough RAM to not need a pagefile, or use as a virtual drive for at least the majority of the pagefie space
And - RAM, consider the electricity saved using low power CPU and RAM -
and the display(s) !
Less electricity cost using them as heating.
So less power to fans to move the heat from the case
Less power to move the heat from the system location.
Not sure about low power SSD reliability/life vs cost !
Try finding a reasonably priced USB-c hub to give you extra USB-c port sockets - I haven't managed !
So - at least 3 USB-c sockets @ 3.2, preferably at least 1 to be 3.2x2, or lightening rated
Multiple displays - maybe just 3 ?
the main "boot" one, and 2 larger ones to ease the eyes and for large worksheets etc.
Also some 3.2 sockets for backup drives.
and maybe micro SD for ongoing through the day worked on file backups
I have a script on the removable storage that copies "Stuff" updated since the last copy to the device -
But just from selected folders - include an extra folder for ad-hoc files -
manual copy to that folder while working means it will be included in the external device backup.
You can even have that script initiated by a timed task -
message on screen if the backup device is not found, and a message if the device is already full, or is full after the backup script.
If you have nothing better -
Use Robocopy with long long filenames allowed -
Some converters from A to c and c to A
And maybe c to HDMI for TV as a display
Printer - Mono for low cost O/P, quality colour for good pictures.
Wi-Fi 6 ?
Wired comms 1Gb ?

JC thanks for posting that link, I have bookmarked it!!! I think it is
funny that the author indicates I am safer doing things myself, that
warrants a big BWAHAHAHAHA.
And Stuart, I have already added 2 Win 11 and one Win 10 to my cart, I am
currently in the process of building a totally new system.
I went into the store (who builds custom PCs) thinking I knew what I wanted
- but the owner talked me out of some things and into others. I told him to
just design something and I would consider it. I intend to bring his
recommendations to my friends and on Win-HOME list to see if his
suggestions pan out.
What I thought would be ideal is a super amazing fast fully loaded system
with 4 hard drives; I would RAID each pair, so let's call this 2 "drives" -
one for personal use and one for client dev work. The client dev "drive"
(RAID pair) I can partition into as many separate OS's and make each
bootable and encrypted.
I will be backing up by partition, and when starting new client projects,
restoring from a base image that has all the dev tools I need; perform
windows updates, and commence development. When that client's project is
complete, take a backup of that partition, store it for future support;
then when starting next client, go back to the base image, load any more
tools I may have discovered that I cannot develop without, perform Windows
updates, take that as my new base image; and start in on that project.
To me this ought to work great. I may invest in NAS to try to automate some
of the backups; that was recommended by the custom build guy who also said
I ought to get a server and but I said no thanks (why would a one man dev
team need a server? Seriously, I am open to input... but he did not
convince me.)
I had almost bought a DELL OPTIPLEX with two large HDs which I would RAID 1
then split into lots of partitions for same effect described above. But
DELL said it would void the warranty. Good-bye DELL!!!
