Sorry, a bit late to that party.
but at least I wish you all had nice holidays and I hope you all will have a
good 2025.
I was on a cruise holiday and did not expect so many mails.
Thank you all.
Rocky, I have heared about the catastrophic fire in LA. I hope you are still
safe.
Best wished to everyone from

Major problems I, as a been trying for many years to be a retiree,
Have found -
1) With no work associates,
Have to get clients to accept
Work is on
"a best efforts basis".
That means you have to be available
@ no charge
To discuss what the user considers a problem with your work.
2) Professional indemnity insurance is a huge oncost -
As in a 10 year insurance on a 3 month contract takes a large bite from the
payment.
Add in requirements to guarantee no use of other person's code or design's -
So - technically, nothing from any documented information -
Even Microsoft user guides - e.g. the examples of using an API, Command,
Function, or VBA script.
3) Consideration if you are unable to provide the needed support -
Temporary sickness, short term, long term, comatose, deceased,
Or just not able to be in a place to do the needed work !
4)
Detail that you only support versions that MS is providing full support for
And do not accept liability for the effect of any of the actions of the
systems facility suppliers, or the client, and their agents.
Having the same setup as the client -
Teams, OS version(s) Application version(s) and fix level -
Win Home/Pro 10, or 11
Office - Basic, home, student, business, Pro, Pro-plus.
E1, E3,E 5 etc. school, college, university, small business, corporate,
government -
And the communication/delivery as well as updates, and getting the data that
is causing them problems.
Via their IT department,
Or is the data confidential, and restricted from the IT crowd too!
Access to their systems - Remotely, so that no backups etc. are on, or in
your system or property !
5) Agreed cost for minor changes to meet ongoing needs
Agreed indication of what is a minor change, a major change, one required by
environment, OS and App changes
Copyright - with you, or are the results of your efforts theirs to "use",
"modify", and/or sell, or distribute.
Maybe set an agreed charge for them to take over that as a formal sale, and
as compensation for any breach of your rights -
Well you have to provide PI -
And you don't anticipate them breaching the agreements - so the charge is
merely for clarity
Sort of like the sign saying what the daily charge and management, handling,
transport, storage, and disposal terms are
for someone using your driveway without having acquired prior authority for
the specific items and periods of use of those locations.
Similar to
"Unauthorised parking here - will cost you this, and this, and this, and
possibly these costs too !"

Thanks for the advice.
I'm only a first-time retiree, not a repeat offender, so I've yet to learn
how to define and explain myself. I've committed myself to a handover
phase but it seems that while it ain't broke that isn't even starting.
Officially retired seemed like a good enough shortcut explanation.
Two weeks ago I gained the honour of being able to call myself a first time
grandfather. That has helped to redefine myself. FWIW I'm 69.
