David if by windows standard you mean home edition then you correctly identified third party software is required. I think the most known brand is AnyDesk and I doubt people would use them if not valid for this use case. There are obviously some concerns exposing a computer to the internet with such software enabled- it is after all what scammers ask people to launch when they are going to scam them.

 

There is also a free version from Google called Chrome Remote Desktop; I haven’t used it but long as someone has a google account I am expecting it to work for them.

 

I have only used AnyDesk (and haven’t even used that for some years.).

 

While AnyDesk can awaken the remote machine from sleep- it cannot boot it up.

 

Beat practice is to buy a server- but you dis say “small” client :)
