Well, after 3 uninstalls and reinstalls, SQL Server finally allowed me to register a server! That pounding you heard last night was my head beating on the wall. :-{ I could get EM up and I could even get QA up, although of course neither of them really worked since they couldn't connect to an active server, but I couldn't register a server until that last install. Nothing changed in between except my frustration level and the name of the server, but suddenly there it was.
