John, a linked server is a permanent connection that's always open if the
database is "open." I just wrote about it for TR. I can send you the article
if you like.

I would take it you are right.  The file is just a (CSV) file.  It is on a
mapped drive.  What is this "linked server" and why do I need one to open a
file?
