And, if using Hyper-V on Server 2008, check to see if he set up disk pass-through (or something like that). The disk pass-through gives almost the same performance as a native disk out of a VM. SQL requires fast I/o access. So even though the host is a honking machine, how much CPU/ memory is alocated to you SQL vm? Are there any other vm's on the same disk with your VM?
