Bit simple but you will get idea. In our case we front almost every major system we have with SharePoint. Its our interface to SQL server, replacing access, its a virtual learning environment, reporting front end, office web apps, workflow, enterprise search, records management, intregrated with office etc etc

Oh and it all runs on SQL server.

Perhaps you could point me to some articles describing why I should learn
this, because so far I have failed to see its point. Seems to me they are
just stuffing everything into a database, which I could just as simply do
myself. But I've been wrong before, so this wouldn't come as big news.
